Spring has been a whirlwind of activity here at Green Jar, and we’re excited to share some major updates with our amazing cannabis community! Alaska’s Cannabis Industry: Growth, Challenges, and Advocacy
Did you know that cannabis is Alaska’s largest agricultural crop by a significant margin? Despite this, our state has 
one of the highest cannabis tax rates in the country. The current excise tax structure puts a heavy financial strain on our cultivators, making it harder for businesses to thrive and for you the consumer to access affordable products.
That’s why Green Jar’s owner, Bailey Stuart, has been hard at work alongside industry leaders and state legislators to advocate for meaningful tax relief. Right now, a crucial piece of legislation is making its way through the Alaska State Legislature—and if passed, it could have a huge impact on the future of cannabis in our state!
How These Bills Could Help the Industry
Currently, Alaska imposes a $50-per-ounce excise tax on cannabis flower, regardless of market price or quality. This flat tax disproportionately affects small and medium-sized cultivators, making it challenging to compete and sustain operations.
The proposed legislation—House Bill 94 (HB94) and Senate Bill 73 (SB73)—aims to reduce this tax burden, lowering it from $50 per ounce to $12 per ounce. This reduction would:
-Provide financial relief for cultivators, allowing them to reinvest in their businesses and improve product quality.
-Lower costs for you our consumer, making legal cannabis more accessible and competitive with the illicit market.
-Strengthen Alaska’s cannabis industry, fostering job growth and economic stability.

CannaBasics 2: Educating the Next Generation of Cannabis Experts
At Green Jar, we believe education is a crucial part of destigmatizing cannabis and fostering a responsible, knowledgeable community. That’s why we’re proud to contribute to cannabis education efforts across Alaska.
Recently, our owner Bailey Stuart and budtender Donna wrapped up another successful session of CannaBasics 2 at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA)! This course is designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge of cannabis history, the endocannabinoid system, industry regulations, and hands-on experience with infusions.
Because cannabis is not allowed on university property, students got creative, infusing baked goods and savory dishes with CBD isolate instead. This hands-on approach gives students a practical understanding of infusion techniques, helping to build essential skills for those looking to enter the cannabis industry.
We love seeing more educational opportunities emerge, and we’re honored to help shape the future of cannabis knowledge in Alaska! Keep an eye out for CannaBasics 1 coming in Fall 2025!
