From Green Jar here is our recommendations for the top 8 things to do in Wasilla, Alaska during the upcoming long winter months.
1. Skeetawk
Skeetawk is the perfect hill to rip down in your ski’s or snow board during the winter time. Sitting just in our back yard is located at mile 10.6 of the Palmer-Fishhook road in the Hatcher Pass State Management area. Green Jar is also a chair sponsor for the life of the chair, up to 40 years! So be sure to snap a picture of you heading up the lift in chair #23 and tag us on Instagram. While you are on your way up to Hatcher Pass or on your way back home be sure to stop by our BRAND NEW Green Jar which will be opening Winter 2022, for all of your cannabis needs!
2. Snow Shoeing
Pull out those old school “Trapper Shoes” from the 1960’s from your parent’s garage and tromp around in some scenic winter trails. Or if you don’t want to be weighed down with what feels like 40lbs on each foot, stop by your local outdoors store and pick up the new light weight snowshoes and get to walking in style. Grab yourself a pre-roll from Green Jar or if you’re going with friends and family a 6 pack of pre-rolls to enhance your walking adventures.
3. AirBnB- Birch Harbor Estates
Enjoy a warm getaway whether you are traveling from out of state or live a stones throw away. Birch Harbor Estates is an ideal home away from home. It’s set in a cozy, quiet neighborhood with magnificent views of the Chugach Mountains during the day and the Aurora Borealis at night. The host is also 420 friendly so grab yourself a critical hit infused pre-roll to light up on the back porch as you keep an eye out for the Northern Lights!
4. Fat Tire Biking on the Flats.
Becoming ever more popular is fat tire biking. It’s exactly what you think, both the front and rear tire are oversized to help with grip in the snow. Dress warm, treat yourselves to some nice gloves and get to peddling your afternoon adventures away! Our budtenders recommend biking out in Hatcher Pass or for a bit more strenuous of a ride head out to Knik Glacier.
5. Snow Machining
Speaking of Knik Glacier, you can rip out there on what most out of towners would call snow mobiles but as us Alaskans call it, snow machines. Enjoy a scenic trip through the Alaskan forest to arrive and be up and close to the magnificent views of thousands of years old ice. There are also plenty of lakes here in town that are easy access, and you can rip down the frozen ice. Warm yourself up after when you get home and enjoy hot coffee with a splash of Lady Gray’s High Chai
6. Cross Country Skiing at Government Peak.
Rent yourself a set of cross country ski’s and poles and head on over to Government Peak! Learn from our budtender Megan’s armature mistakes and don’t treat them like you would quad skating. The ski’s really are just a walking motion, lift up your heel and glide forward. It would have been a faster learning experience if she wasn’t high and laughing her butt off, though it did make the adventure for her all the more exhilarating. There are some steep hills to go down, but be daring and adventures and don’t fear falling on your butt!
7. Reindeer Farm
Located just outside of Wasilla is the quaint town of Palmer where you can sign up for a fun filled tour of the Reindeer Farm. During your hour tour you get to feed, pet and interact with their reindeer, moose, alpaca’s and so much more! A perfect excursion for any person or a whole family. Made all the more magical in the winter months as the snow is falling, perfect time to take the family Christmas photo with the loveable Dolly the bison in the background.
8. Ice Fishing
Wasilla, and really the Matanuska Susitna Valley has premium ice fishing spots! Budtender Bailey’s favorite spot is Big Lake, but other good places are Lake Louise and Byers Lake. Put on your cold weather gear, grab your ice auger, fishing rod, and a comfy chair to chill out in. Spend a couple hours vibing out with your favorite Top Hat Cartridge as you wait and keep an eye on your line.
